Vaportek, like many manufactures, have found themselves bombarded with questions regarding the new SDS format. Here’s a quick explanation to the purpose, use, and correct understanding of an SDS:
SDS (Safety Data Sheets) are an upgrade from the old MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets), and are required to be presented in a consistent, user-friendly, 16-section format. SDS also reflect OSHA’s new hazardous chemical labeling requirements (pictograms) outlined in the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The HCS attempts to align with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The goal, then, is to have one standard of SDS worldwide. These changes will help ensure improved quality and consistency in the classification and labeling of all chemicals and enhance worker comprehension.
SDS are designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling/working with a particular substance. For example, an SDS for paint is not highly pertinent to someone who uses a can of paint once a year, but is extremely important to someone who uses that paint 40 hours a week. SDS's are not meant for consumers because they do not reflect customer levels of exposure when using a specific product, under specific guidelines. The Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) is the governing rule for consumer use.
